6월 3일 致命的時刻沒有想到忙碌了這麽久,部落格的續筆竟然是在這個致命的時刻。雖然我是一直性命無虞,可是今天當我看到那個奔走了二十年的母親蒼老的面容時,我知道此刻對於太多人的記憶來説真的是太過沉重了。大學時翻過丁文江先生英文傳記的翻譯版,記住了譯者的名字,是丁先生的侄女,那也算是和我家鄉沾邊了。後來得知了名字背後的這些苦痛,長眠岳麓山下的丁先生是否也把自己骨子裏的的執著留給了他的後人呢? 説道沉重,我想到了魯迅那篇《為了忘卻的紀念》。那樣一個在正統的文學史中被描繪得大義凜然的角色,到頭來也只能在生活的夾縫中喘息,塗寫那些為了忘卻的紀念。他寫作真的是為了忘卻麽,還是紀念?我不知道,然而對於自己來説,從當年對於罷工的誤讀和懵懂到今日的義憤和反思,忘卻恐怕只能是自欺欺人了。 今日下午照例去韓國阿姨那裏理髮。我想此時是一個最有意義的時刻,因為面對那些紛亂的記憶,我們不正是要理清頭緒,走向未來麽?或許,魯迅真正希望的是為了紀念的忘卻吧?忘卻並不是目的,而只是手段,我們最終需要的還是紀念和前進。 沒想到自己在那樣一個致命的時刻離開了幼兒園,剛剛過完兒童節的祖國花朵自然不需要知道太多的風霜雪雨。可是我們的教育如果就是讓園丁們培養愛國愛民愛黨的花朵——至少我小時候就是這麽學的——那麽花朵們會不會終有一天會發現它們只不過是園丁意志的物化,而少了些生命本身的美麗呢?或許我並不是一株園丁喜歡的花朵,不過我相信生命的可貴之處不在別的,而在陳寅恪先生悼念王國維先生時所說的“獨立之精神,自由之思想”。沒有了這些,那就是真正的致命了吧。 2월 22일 Too American for Chinese, and Too Chinese for AmericansThings have been funny today. I was chastised twice for almost being ignorant of the U.S., be it the politics or culture. Scenario 1: I was on the weekly phone call to my family as usual this morning. I know I should not discuss with my father American politics, but the problem is that he always seems interested, although he maintains some hardheaded presuppositions, commonly found in our ideology indoctrination, like Western democracy is essentially a lie. After a somewhat heated exchange about the changing administration in the U.S., here is my father’s advice (I paraphrase): “Let me tell you, son, whoever in the position (note: presidency) is the same; never believe that you individual voter could do anything.” My stance basically is that American democracy is never flawless, but it is always open to positive input. In this sense, it is still a preferable institution. Scenario 2: The other day, I complained to another Chinese student at IU who has been here for a much longer time than me about the unsatisfactory learning motivation of some of my undergraduate students. Also, I uttered my negative opinion of the entertainment obsessed by quite a few college students in the U.S., like the party, drinking, etc. I should have referred these leisure as unmeaningful. Today I received an email from that student. Below is a direct quote: “By the way, the things you said about Americans' entertainment the other day was not only superficial but profoundly biased. That shows how little you know about the Americans--you're simply not in the right place to make sense of your students, I'm afraid.” So what is wrong, or if not, question here? In any case, I am truthful to myself, and never pretend to give authoritarian judgment by any account. If my observations are unfavourable to others, this is what they are. Perhaps, as the title indicates, this is just the dilemma of my awkward position right now. 2월 1일 生,離,死,別人生的起落,到最後,或許都逃不脫這四個字吧。 龍應台的短文,在《亞洲周刊》的2008十大好書評選中就榜上有名,不過今日才得閑在網上瀏覽。此番不再犀利的筆鋒,倒是讓我想起了《孩子你慢慢來》中對生命本身柔性的感悟。 目送(轉載自http://www.tunghai74.org/letters/08-07-19-LongYingTai-MuSong.htm) 我慢慢地、慢慢地意識到 , 我的落寞 , 彷彿和另一個背影有關 。 每個禮拜到醫院去看他 , 是十幾年後的時光了 。推著他的輪椅散步 , 他的頭低垂到胸口 。有一次 , 發現排泄物淋滿了他的褲腿 , 我蹲下來用自己的手帕幫他擦拭 , 裙子也沾上了糞便 , 但是我必須就這樣趕回台北上班 。護士接過他的輪椅 , 我拎起皮包 , 看著輪椅的背影 , 在自動玻璃門前稍停 , 然後沒入門後 。 是啊,不必追,因為已不可追。蘇軾的《江城子·乙卯正月二十日夜記夢》,雖然只是悼念亡妻,卻因勾畫出任何追思的無奈,傳頌了千年: 十年生死兩茫茫,不思量,自難忘。千里孤墳,無處話淒涼。縱使相逢應不識,塵滿面,鬢如霜。 夜來幽夢忽還鄉,小軒窗,正梳妝。相顧無言,惟有淚千行。料得年年斷腸處,明月夜,短松崗。 只可惜我們的感情總是讓我們徒勞地去追,即使年年斷腸也還是義無反顧。 1월 8일 轉載:亞洲週刊2008年中文十大好書揭曉,章海陵雖然現在對我來説,讀中文書應該算是休息,不過以下這些對於中國厚重的審視或者拷問可能遠非輕鬆吧。引自http://www.yzzk.com/cfm/Content_Archive.cfm?channel=ax&path=3314525411/03as1.cfm 十卷本《中華人民共和國史》在香港問世,這是第一套非官方史,中立開放的價值立場贏得學界與讀者重視。《墓碑》更揭開一場民間耳語已久但沒有真確求證的悲劇真相。十大好書見證全球華人的思想解放,從國家大事到個人命運轉折的私密空間,都展現求真精神,衝破外在權力與內心世界的禁區。 中華民族有太多的記憶稍不留心就成為一片空白,但全球華人知識分子卻是這「記憶廢墟」的文字冒險家,在史料的斷瓦殘礫中,重新拼回中華民族的歷史與感情圖象。 1월 3일 Heros, do not Zheteng...When enjoying the first dinner of 2009 at around 7 pm, I was bombarded by the tribute to the heros back from Iraq or Afganistan by the so called "independent" Lou Dobbs (in fact his female protege) at CNN. Well, if these heros are viewed in the recent talk of Hu Jintao, do they zheteng a little bit? To be sure, I do not have an issue with those heros personally. They are at least loyal citizens to the current administration, which is involved in unjustified warfare even approaching its time of departure. So what? Bush told us. I cherish democracy and freedom, and I certainly do not hate the U.S. But in order to protect these, does it necessarily follow that numerous young men and women should be deployed abroad? While saluting the returned heros (let alone those leaving us forever), while extolling the heroic struggle in their postwar lives in the U.S., do we risk losing sight of the foundational issue at stake here? Why do we not try every measure to promote peace? Instead of letting the heros zheteng in the remote areas of the world, and endure its aftermath, could we not make use of their potential in a more constructive way? Unfortunately, the promilitary "independence" of LD is not receptive to such a view. If we return to Hu's term, what does zheteng mean anyway? Mass protests? Definitely yes. Government misconduct? Probably not. Despite its popularist innovation, which should have been highlighted by Chinese media, I do not think this differs too much from the party doctrine that stability prevails. Again, I do not have a problem with stability in China. However, if this means to quench civil dissent yet tolerate official misbehaviour, I would rather see a little zheteng in China. 12월 23일 The Eventful 2008A moment ago, when asked about how long I have been living at the current address on the phone, I just replied without too much thinking "less than half a year, I moved in on June 20, 2008..." Well, there seems to be a problem, right? The half-year limit has already slipped away without my acknowledgement. The time does fly. For a second year Ph.D. student like me, everything seems business as usual, except that I could no longer enjoy the holidays as before. Too many things to catch up with... For academics we might not care about the 9-5 schedule, but the iron rule for us is that there is no protective separation between work and holiday. Thus, I really admire those who could constantly update their blogs or Facebooks. I could not do that without compromising my studies... Yet for the countries I feel concerned and am affliated with, the past year is undoubtedly eventful. The natural disaster, social unrest, political turnover, and economic downturn all pop up and command our wisdom. We certainly do not have any predetermined solution to all these, but we could nevertheless achieve a better-informed answer with broad inputs. Benevolent dictators might be powerful, but they are not dependable. Without the civic engagement of the people, a healthy governance could not be sustained. Let us not forget what Voltaire said centuries ago: "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," and proceed from this basic principle to build a democratic and humane future. 6월 3일 Wait while Working AwakeHow many men must die before one knows death? Nineteen years might not be enough, but there should and will be an end. Every step forward, however difficult, always witnesses the irresistable dignity of life and humanity.
